Persevere Again

‘Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.’ James 1:12

We all experience trials on the mission field and it’s not easy to remain positive 24/7.  Trials come in many different forms: people, places and circumstances that we face.  It can be a challenge to have to face that cold shower every morning because there is no hot water or eat that bowl of beans and matooke when all you really want is a burger and chips!  It can be hard when you’re working in a community and communication seems a constant uphill struggle.  Or perhaps you’ve invested much time and effort and it feels like nothing is changing and you’re not making the difference that you want to.  Perhaps like me you get fed up of dodging pot holes and worrying that you’re going to run over one of the many boda boda guys cycling their passengers along the dusty road….. I could grow to love the M25 you know.

Staying committed, remaining enthusiastic, continuing to love and serve, to persevere on the missionary road is no walk in the park.  It’s important to acknowledge the trials we face and to share with others the difficulties.  This can be easier said than done especially when you want to write an encouraging prayer letter home but remember those at home have been called to the role of supporting you, their missionary.  You’re not on a solo mission, you’re part of a wider team.  Those at home have a part to play in loving and supporting you but they can’t efficiently unless they know the challenges you face.

So I encourage you to persevere, bring your trials to your loving heavenly Father who knows the road is not always easy.  Ask him to strengthen you and equip you with all that is necessary for you to complete the work he has called you to.   But also sensitively share with someone you trust at home, who can pray and support you.  Remember you are not alone and our Father provides all we need and who we need, just when we need it. Keep your eyes on him and all his promises -  He will sustain you on the road ahead.
